After the Juventus superstar spurned a chance to give the Serie A champions a valuable win from the penalty spot against Atalanta, Andrea Pirlo gave Cristiano Ronaldo his backing.
Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo showed his support for Cristiano Ronaldo after his penalty was saved, and Atalanta won a share of the points.
Ronaldo has now failed to score four of the Bianconeri’s 30 penalties, but the Juve legend and head coach Pirlo did not hesitate to laud the effort of his striker.
In Wednesday’s 1-1 draw, Ronaldo saw his 61st-minute spot-kick smothered by Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini as Juve missed the chance to make up ground on Milan’s unbeaten Serie A champions.
“We had an excellent match against a strong team with great pace. We should have taken home the three points and had more wickedness and conviction. We created a lot, but we were unable to secure the result and so it ended in a draw. Anything can happen, but we took to the field with the right attitude: this evening was an important game in terms of intensity. Atalanta is a difficult team to face and we did so with an open mind.” Pirlo told reporters post-match.
“It was not an easy game but he did well.”
“If he scored his penalty some judgments would have changed.”
“He did what he had to, maybe not brilliant as usual but he is a champion and champions miss penalties too.”
