Paolo Maldini confirmed Giroud move to Milan

AC Milan director Paolo Maldini confirmed on Wednesday that Olivier Giroud is expected to arrive in Milan. The Chelsea player is set to sign a two-year contract with the Serie A runners-up. The new deal of the 34-year old which will run until 2023 is worth three million euros per season.

Giroud had signed a contract extension with Chelsea, but it was only to keep him from signing with another Premier League club as a free agent. Even before Chelsea extended his contract, the French striker had reached an agreement with Milan. After a month of negotiations with the Premier League giants, the Serie A giants were able to secure his services. The French striker is expected to arrive in Milan on Thursday, but his medical with the Serie A giants will take place on Friday.

While Maldini is regretting the exit of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who joined Paris Saint Germain on a five-year deal, he said ‘We needed an experienced player.’ During the Serie A fixture list unveiling for 2021-22 Maldini told DAZN, “Yes, Olivier Giroud should arrive tomorrow. Olivier is a champion, he’s done great things with France and Chelsea. He is a very reliable player and that’s what we are looking for, as we have the youngest squad in Serie A, so we need some with more experience.”

2018 France World Cup winner Giroud arrived at Chelsea after completing six years stint at Arsenal. With the Blues, the Frenchman won the Europa League and Champions League. In England, between Chelsea and Arsenal, he has won four FA Cups and three Community Shields.

On missing Donnarumma, who saved two penalties for Italy in Euro 2020 win, Maldini said, “Gigio remains an important loss for us even if we have bought a great goalkeeper. He’s a boy who grew up in our nursery. The fact that the story is interrupted hurts. With Gigio the past was very beautiful, but the future fascinates me more.”
