Neville advised former club boss Ole to sign players like Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should reinforce his first XI this summer advised Gary Neville to begin the mammoth task of catching Liverpool and Manchester City.

15 points off their rivals City and a huge 33 points behind the Liverpool champions, United captured a place in the Champions League.

Neville disclosed his thoughts on the United squad, saying that the club needs to sign more players of the quality of Bruno Fernandes by searching into the transfer market to make a start on closing the gap.

“I think Man Utd is a side that starts getting tired in the last few games, playing that first team, that first 11, for a week or two,” he told Sky Sports.

“They were absolutely done on that pitch with 20 minutes to go. That proves they need more players.”

“The last time United finished in the top three was under Jose Mourinho and that summer they spent £ 170 m and obviously didn’t invest it as prudently as they did last year.”

“United need to invest that money again, but this time do it right to get anywhere near Liverpool or City. That squad needs improvement, the team needs improvement but I think it’s a big, big day for Ole.”

Neville added: “The first 11 they need to improve, that is first and foremost. That’s not to the detriment of any of today’s players, some of the players out there are good enough to be a part of a squad that still can compete.”

“If you’re going to play 55-60 games a season, then you’ve got enough games for 15/16 quality players to go around. It’s about making sure they get those players who want to come to the club for the right reasons, who come to the club.”

“Historically, the United model is to sign players on the brink of accomplishing something great, rather than signing players who are the world’s great players. For 30/40 years Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich have done that.”

“Just never did that united. They have always signed players who are either the best players in the Premier League, who are emerging or young talented international players who have their best years to come.”

“That seems to be what Ole has brought back in the past 12 months. It’s working. It’s better.”
