Mike Maignan joins AC Milan replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma

Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan joins AC Milan after his club won Ligue 1 title last week. Milan confirmed the signing of Maignan on a contract until June 2026. The Rossoneri was keen to find a new goalkeeper with Gianluigi Donnarumma due to leave San Siro. 

However, the Italian club did not reveal the transfer fee, it is rumored that Milan has signed the Frenchman for €15 million. The 25-year-old shot-stopper has agreed to a five-year contract with the Diavolo. He will move to Italy after representing France at the European Championship.

“AC Milan is delighted to announce the signing of French player Mike Maignan from LOSC Lille, who will be joining the Club starting from 1 July 2021,” the club wrote in a statement.

“The goalkeeper has signed a contract with the Rossoneri until 30 June 2026 and will wear the number 16 jersey.”

“Born in Cayenne (French Guayana) on 3 July 1995, Mike Maignan spent his youth career at Paris Saint-Germain. In the summer of 2015, he moved to LOSC Lille, where he made 180 appearances over six seasons, winning the French Ligue 1 title in the season just ended.”

“After having played in all age categories of the French National Team, from Under 16 to Under 21, he made his senior international debut in October 2020 and is now part of the 26-man squad for Euro 2020.”

Maignan will replace Donnarumma after his contract terminates next month. Milan director Paolo Maldini confirmed his exit on a free transfer. “We are going our separate ways, but I can only wish him the best,” Maldini told Milan TV on Wednesday. The Italian goalkeeper has made 251 appearances for the club in all competitions, keeping 88 clean sheets, and played a key role in helping the club finish second in Serie A this season.
