Michael Ballack suffered from a health scare during the lockdown period and had a tumour removed from near his spinal cord.
According to Bild, during an MRI exam by doctors, the former midfielder of Chelsea and Germany had a growth discovered on his body.
But for the 43-year-old the early detection proved lucky, and the tumour was removed.
Laboratory exams then cleared Ballack of any concerns that the development would be cancerous, with results revealing it to be benign.
He took five weeks to recover from the operation in Portugal and joined the final stages of the Champions League.
Ballack hung up his boots before eight years from now, after two years at Bayer Leverkusen.
Earning 98 caps for his country, Ballack led them to World Cup final in 2002.
