Lionel Messi has admitted that in the upcoming 2021 Ballon d’Or he intends to vote for Paris Saint-Germain teammates Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. Messi faces stiff competition from the likes of Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich and Jorginho of Chelsea. The Argentine is one of the favourites to win the award, which would be his eighth.
In football news, Lewandowski recently asked people to leave politics at home when voting for the Ballon d’Or winner, but he won’t get his request from Messi, who admitted to L’Equipe that he intends to back his teammates. “Obviously, I have two players in my team for whom I will vote: Neymar and Kylian,” he revealed.
Messi did, however, laud Lewandowski for his efforts over the past two years, conceding that the Pole is one of the favourites to deny him a seventh Ballon d’Or. “There are players who individually have had a great season, like Robert Lewandowski,” he said. “[Karim] Benzema has also had a great year.”
“It’s hard to say [who will win] because what you do as a team matters a lot in the Ballon d’Or. It used to be the best player of the year that won the award but now it’s the one who accumulates the most titles. Achieving things has a lot of weight in this award.”
