Max Kruse returns to Bundesliga

Max Kruse, former Werder Bremen, and Germany striker agreed on terms with Union Berlin and have returned to the Bundesliga.

Scoring seven goals in 20 appearances at the Süper Lig, the 32-year-old left Bremen at the end of the 2018/19 season for Turkish side Fenerbahce.

“I’m happy to be playing again in the Bundesliga and get to know a cool new club like Union, which has developed really well in the last few years,” Kruse said. “It was important for me to switch to a club that totally convinces me and challenges me. I immediately felt comfortable during the conversations with those responsible at Union, that’s why I decided to join the Union.”

After spells at Freiburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Wolfsburg and Bremen in 250 top-flight outings, Kruse has scored 74 times and became a familiar face in the Bundesliga.

His experience and nose-for-goal could prove useful for Union, which secured an impressive 11th-place finish in its 2019/20 debut Bundesliga campaign and will now seek to avoid suffering from the dreaded ‘second-season syndrome’ many newly-promoted sides.

“With Max Kruse, we were able to sign a player that has proved its quality both nationally and internationally for years,” said Oliver Ruhnert, the sporting director of Union. “He’ll help us achieve our goals in the new season with his offensive qualities and the Bundesliga experience.”
