Mats Hummels gifted France victory over Germany

Mats Hummels’ own goal was enough to give France a 1-0 win over Germany as the world champions dominated at Munich to successfully start the Euro 2020 campaign. After 20 minutes, Hummels sent a free-kick from the top of the penalty box. France deserved the win, with both Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema, second-half goals being ruled out at offside, while Adrian Rabiot also hit the bar for Les Bleus.

The home defeat put pressure on Germany ahead of the next match against Portugal on Saturday, at the Allianz Arena. German coach Joachim Low, who will step down after the European Championship, is desperate to avoid a repeat of the 2018 World Cup when Die Mannschaft suffered the humiliation of finishing their final group.

It was a heartbreaking night for Hummels, boosting the German defense after two years in exile in international football. Tuesday’s 15-minute opening was spent with European loads trying to defend each other until the Frenchman began to pressurize and received a handful of suction cups.

Bayern Munich’s French defender Lucas Hernandez met Paul Pogba’s left bank low cross, but Hummels managed to block a close shot from a corner. There was a lot of dullness in the first half. France got off to a strong start in the second half, with Rabiot hitting the bar after a vigorous run in Mbappe’s area.

The home team worked hard to cross the middle and as a result, there was a good chance of getting one back as the ball tried to lift it over keeper Mbappe. Unfortunately, the ball went right over the bar.

With 16 minutes remaining, Low freshened his leg in the German offensive, with Leroy Sane and Timo Werner replacing Kai Havertz and Serge Gnabry, but the French defense remained firm.

In the last 10 minutes, Mbappe was furious that he would be denied a penalty when Hummels’ attack jeopardized the ball before the French striker fell on the pitch. After a 3–0 win against Hungary in Budapest earlier, the result places France second in goal difference in Group F’s first group after Portugal.
