Mateo Kovacic says it is important to win titles

Mateo Kovacic although insists that only trophies will be the true success barometer in a club like Chelsea, he also believes that the progress made at Stamford Bridge this season justifies Frank Lampard’s and his players’ work and indicates an exciting future ahead.

That is why the Heads Up FA Cup final tomorrow represents such an important opportunity for the Croatian to add domestic silverware to the Europa League title he won the last term while on loan from Real Madrid.

“It’s heading somewhere but in the end, we need to show it on the pitch,” Kovacic says of the foundations that have been laid in western London over the past 12 months.

“We need to win titles because it is not so good if you don’t win titles. Chelsea is doing great things, making great signatures, and showing great faith in our coach, which is very important for him and also for us.”

In the Spanish capital, Kovacic won eight major trophies and in his home country with Dinamo Zagreb, he won five more trophies among the finale of the season honors.

To add another medal to his growing personal collection the 26-year-old, who enjoys playing on the big stage, is keen to come back to Wembley.

“Being in another final will be nice,” he continues. “Football’s nicest thing is to play finals and then win them.”

“Chelsea is used to winning titles so we are going to do all we can to play a good match in the FA Cup final and then let’s see what’s going on.”

More minutes of Premier League was played by only five outfielders than Kovacic this season, emphasizing his importance to the midfield team, where he was a key cog in utilizing progressive football at the heart of Lampard’s play style.

Number 17 was pleased with his contribution in his first campaign as a permanent Chelsea player, while he admits he wants to add more goals and assists to his game.
