In a closed-door practice match at Old Trafford, Manchester United defeated Burnley with Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, and Fred scoring as the match score resulted in 3-1. The game against the Clarets was scheduled to help United players gain fitness and give them a chance to play before the Premier League season resumes at the weekend with a trip to the south coast to face Southampton.
Jadon Sancho started the game to sharpen his skills after he made his United debut off the bench against Leeds on Saturday. While Phil Jones and Eric Bailly came off the bench to play crucial minutes in the second half, Tom Heaton was also named to the starting lineup.
Jesse Lingard was back at the pitch after missing the Leeds game due to a positive COVID-19 test. Last season he had a successful loan spell at West Ham in the second half of the term. Aaron Lennon helped Burnley take the lead but United equalized when Martial turned the ball in following a Harry Maguire header at a corner.
Lingard’s finish to put United ahead 2-1 was described as “clinical” by the club’s official match report. Fred, who scored a rare goal against Leeds, then made it 3-1 to seal the victory.
United another new signee, Raphael Varane only trained on Monday for the first time with his new teammates, thus the Frenchman was not present for the practice match. He completed an initial £34 million football transfer from Real Madrid. However, the Frenchman could still be in contention for Sunday’s match against Southampton.
