Manchester United and Liverpool ended in a tie in Premier League

Manchester United sit top of the Premier League table after holding champions Liverpool to a goalless draw in what could still prove to be an important fight in the championship chase this season.

In third position, Liverpool are a point further off the top, but could sink to fourth if Manchester City beat Crystal Palace in the late kick-off.

The Red Devils had the best opportunities yet soaked up a lot of pressure and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be satisfied with a stalemate overall that sees his side edge two points away from second-placed Leicester City.

United scarcely threatened but went nearest to cracking the deadlock when a free kick inches deep was curved by Bruno Fernandes.

The home side dominated the first period and would have been surprised that Roberto Firmino, who missed a range of half opportunities, did not start the scoring.

The pattern persisted after the break however, amid the urging of Thiago Alcantara, who was excellent on his belated Anfield debut, Liverpool’s assault again failed to ignite.

United almost nicked it late on, but Alisson made super saves to keep out both Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

Next up, Liverpool will aim to end a four-match winless run when they host Burnley on Thursday while United visit Fulham on Wednesday.
