Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti could resume his career in League 1, according to Sport.es. Former club Lyon has shown interest in Samuel Umtiti who played for the club before moving to Spain. Barça’s urgent need to reduce its wage bill make the player a strong contender to leave Camp Nou this summer.
Olympique Lyonnais’ management is ready to sign the player on loan and pay half his salary, while the other half will be paid by Blaugrana. Due to the difficult financial situation resulting from the coronavirus pandemic Lyon are not ready to buy the player this summer. Hence, the club is working on signing ‘Big Sam’ on a loan deal in which they would cover approximately 50% of his wage. It remains to be seen whether Barça would agree to this deal from a financial or sporting perspective, and whether the center-back would consider a return to his former club, the transfer news is yet to be confirmed.
The 27-year-old Frenchman refused when Barcelona had earlier offered him to part ways on mutual agreement in order to reduce the wage bill. Due to his constant knee problems, Umtiti had a poor season at Barca. The Frenchman played 16 games last season and received two yellow cards.
Umtiti signed a new deal with Barçelona in 2016 leaving Lyon but he is now set to make a return. His current contract at the Catalan club will expire in 2023. Previously, Arsenal and Manchester United have been credited with an interest in the center-back but former club Lyon has now opened talks with Barcelona over a move, according to Sports.
The World Cup-winning Frenchman rose through the youth ranks at Lyon and made 170 appearances for the club before leaving for Barca in 2016, but he only started six La Liga games last season.
