Luis Suarez criticized Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman for his lack of personality and also defeated former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu after winning La Liga with Atletico Madrid.
The 34-year-old striker was controversially allowed to leave Barca for internal rivals Atletico after six successful seasons at Camp Nou. Suarez responded by scoring 21 goals in 32 league games for Atletico, including two in the last two games in a priceless win against Osasuna and Vladimir.
The Uruguay striker regularly discussed how hurt he was when Barca left and Atletico looked at him from a new angle after showing his excitement when he crossed the line to claim the league’s glory.
“I will always be grateful to Barcelona and I will never go against Barcelona, they gave me everything and allowed me to be elite,” said Suarez. “But obviously the President [Bartomeu] said everything in the press instead of calling me. Then they wanted Leo to stay [Messi]. He called me to convince him, used to speak [Antoine] Griezmann – why didn’t he call me when they wanted to go?”
“Koeman told me that they were not in his plans, so he said, ‘If we don’t realize it by tomorrow, you’re back on my plans and I’m counting on you against Villarreal.’ Then I saw that the man has no personality. He was not strong enough to tell me that he did not need me.” “Nobody [from Barca’s management has] I congratulated myself, but I almost sent them a photo! “
Suarez said it would seem “impossible” for him to leave Atlético before the next season, with the club confirming that he would remain for the second year of his contract if he were to do so.
Meanwhile, Atletico chief Diego Simeon discussed the circumstances surrounding Suarez’s signature and insisted that he would not let the opportunity go hand-in-hand. Simeon said, “I was very happy the day before that, when I talked to him, I had already talked to him when he was in Liverpool in an attempt to sign with us, but he chose Barcelona.”
