Michael Edwards will step down as Liverpool’s sporting director at the completion of the 2021-22 season. Liverpool’s sporting director, Michael Edwards, has announced that he will leave the football club after his contract expires. According to a club statement, Edwards has informed Liverpool’s ownership that he wishes to pursue a new challenge after his contract expires at the end of the 2021-22 season.
Julian Ward, the assistant sporting director, Julian Ward will be promoted following Edwards’ resignation. In 2011 the 42 years old joined Liverpool as head of analytics and later became director of technical performance. Later that, he was promoted to the technical director before taking over as sporting director in November 2016.
Edwards has presided over a tremendously successful period for the Reds, with Jurgen Klopp’s side winning the 2018-19 Champions League, 2019-20 Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup during his tenure.
“To be part of this club during this period has been a privilege due to the people I have been fortunate enough to work with and the success we have enjoyed,” Edwards said. “I had always planned to cap my time at the club to a max of 10 years. I’ve loved working here, but I am a big believer in change. I think it’s good for the individual and, in a work setting, good for the employer, too.”
