Liverpool probable to suffer for PL title following a loss to Brighton

Once again, the Jurgen Klopp champions failed to find a way past a well-drilled visiting defense and endured back-to-back home league losses for the first time since 2012, when Steven Alzate redirected 56 minutes into the Seagulls winner.

After a shock 1-0 defeat to Brighton at Anfield, Liverpool’s chances of retaining the Premier League title suffered a huge blow.

Early on, Liverpool went close through Mohamed Salah, but could not generate any trouble for Robert Sanchez and since October 1984 in three consecutive home league games, eventually struggled to score for the first time.

The result means Liverpool fall to fourth place, seven points adrift of leaders Manchester City having played a game more. Brighton rise to the 15th spot and are now 10 points clear of the drop zone.

Brighton visits fellow strugglers Burnley on Saturday. Liverpool will need to recover quickly for Sunday’s crunch clash with Manchester City at Anfield, which is surely now a must-win encounter.

Liverpool – Brighton 0-1

Goal: Alzate (56)

Liverpool: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Henderson, Robertson, Thiago, Wijnaldum (Oxlade-Chamberlain 68), Milner, Salah, Firmino (Jones 79), Shaqiri (Origi 64).
