Lionel Messi’s contract is making rounds in news over the time now. Last year Messi refused to continue his career with Barcelona and wanted to quit the club but later the Argentine agreed to one year contract which expired on June 30, 2021. According to reports, Lionel Messi may have to wait until January to be registered by Barcelona.
As per football transfer news, Barcelona is sweating to collect funds because Messi’s new contract cannot be registered until the club’s salary cap in La Liga is met and fans are well aware of the situation. In the midst of the slow progress, ESPN speculated on whether Messi might have to wait until January for his contract to be registered.
The La Liga deadline is not until the end of August, just over two weeks after the season begins on the second weekend of the month, but it has been reported that Barcelona would like to have Messi and their new players registered by the start of the new season.
With the season only three weeks away if Barcelona fails to sign Messi by August 31, there is little chance the Argentine superstar will wait until January. The best player in the world isn’t about to take five months off because the club he loves can’t get its house in order, hence, it’s clear that his preference is to stay at Barcelona this summer, and he’s willing to be patient while also taking a pay cut to do so.
At this point, Messi would have two obvious options. First, he leaves before the end of August to ensure he has enough time to register for a new club before that team’s respective league deadline. Second, he agrees to a contract with a significantly reduced wage at Barcelona, one that the club can afford to pay under their constraints, with the understanding that the money will be made up with a new and improved contract later on when necessary departures are managed.
