Lionel Messi again became the winner of the Ballon d’Or award and it is a record win for him. He now holds the title for the seventh time beating Robert Lewandowski, who was a tough competition for the title this year. Also, the Argentine has two more titles ahead of his main rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I am very proud to have won the Golden Ball once again in France,” Messi said. “Winning it for the seventh time is unbelievable. I want to thank my family, my friends and all the people who always follow and support me, because without them I would not have been able to do this.”
He won the last six titles playing for Barcelona, but this year he lifted the trophy as a Paris Saint-Germain player. This year Messi also made Argentina the champion of Copa America. In the final held in July, his team defeated Brazil. Since joining new club PSG, Messi has scored four goals and three assists in 11 matches but has led his team to win matches on several key occasions. Messi scored 30 goals for Barcelona last season. He also finished as the top scorer in the Spanish league and scored two goals while Barca won the Copa del Rey.
He posted a picture of him holding the Golden Ball at the Théâtre du Châtelet on Instagram, with a caption: “Although I always put the collective forward, I cannot hide my joy at having been able to win another Ballon d’Or. I want to thank you and dedicate to all my colleagues and @afaseleccion staff for the beautiful year we have lived through. Also those I had at @fcbarcelona and those at @psg. And of course to my family and friends, as well as to all the people who support me, who are next to me, take care of me and make me perform every day: without all of them this would never have been possible. And thanks also to @francefootball for the Gala and the award. Big hug!!!”
