Lille lifted themselves into the top half of the table as they looked back to their best in a commanding 2-0 victory over Marseille at Stade Pierre Mauroy. The reigning champions of France made a strong start to the football match causing their opponents a multitude of problems, particularly in wide areas.
When Jonathan Bamba found Jonathan Ikoné to sting the palms of Pau López, an early opportunity presented itself before Jonathan David squared the ball to Burak Yılmaz who sent a good chance over the bar. Eventually, with 28 minutes into the game the home side took a deserved lead when David scored his fifth Ligue 1 goal of the season.
Yılmaz thought he’d added a second goal minutes before the half time break, but it was ruled out for offside. Set to follow an unbeaten start to the season with back-to-back losses, Marseille’s afternoon went from bad to worse as Cengiz Ünder was shown a second yellow card and sent off the pitch with 15 minutes remaining on the clock.
The visitors, who were lacking the influential Dimitri Payet, offered little threat all afternoon and conceded again through a Timothy Weah’s pass to Jonathan David – the Canadian doubled the score claiming a 2-0 victory over ‘The Olympians’.
