Laporta to visit Qatar for meeting over Xavi contract

Al-Sadd has advised Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, that he must visit Qatar for face-to-face communications with the club over a contract to sign manager Xavi. Laporta has focused completely on Xavi following Ronald Koeman’s departure last week. Xavi has a contract with Al-Sadd until the summer of 2023.

Al-Sadd has been dissatisfied with Spanish football club Barcelona’s actions and media coverage of their pursuit of Xavi, expressing their displeasure on social media once or twice, and according to AS, they want the circus to halt and will only speak with Laporta directly. In order to discuss a deal to release Xavi from his contract, Qatari officials have warned Laporta that he must fly to Doha, with Al-Sadd offering ‘friendly discussions’ as long as they don’t have to speak to any intermediaries or anyone working on Laporta’s behalf.

That isn’t thought to be a problem for Laporta; rather, it is thought to be a slight nuisance because a journey to Doha would take up a significant portion of his already hectic schedule. He is set to fly out on Thursday for meetings following Al-Sadd’s match against Al-Duhail, which will be a true top-of-the-table affair. Xavi’s side would go six points clear of their opponents at the top of the league with a win in this match.

During that meeting, Laporta is expected to finalize a deal for Xavi, with most of the arrangements with Al-Sadd already worked out, but a personal meeting with the Barcelona president has been seeking to complete the deal. Barcelona would agree to a friendly against Al-Sadd in Qatar in the next two years and might avoid paying any compensation for Xavi, according to reports.

Due to the delay, Xavi is unlikely to be in command of Barcelona against Celta Vigo on Saturday. The Spaniard might make his move during the forthcoming international break, and lead his former club out against Espanyol at Camp Nou on November 20.
