Winning two consecutive home games at the start of the Spanish league season for the first time in seven years, Valencia easily defeated Alavés with a 3-0 football score on Friday. Here is a recap of the last two La Liga matches. Within three minutes of the game, Daniel Wass scored a goal at Mestalla Stadium, and Carlos Soler and Gonçalo Guedes added goals.
Since 2014-15 Valencia hadn’t won two consecutive league games. They had last won five in a row in the 2014-15 season. Valencia is now leading the table with seven points from three matches one more than Mallorca, ahead of the rest of the round. “We worked well in the preseason and were hopeful of a good beginning in the league,” Guedes said. “We played a good match individually and collectively.”
It was Alavés’ straight third defeat, following a loss at home to Real Madrid and on the road to Mallorca. Alavés’ opponents have outscored them 8-1. In first-half injury time Soler added to the lead as Wass scored early on from close range and Guedes sealed the victory in the 60th minute. Valencia started the season with a 1-0 win over Getafe, then drew 1-1 at Granada.
In a match between promoted clubs Mallorca defeated Espanyol 1-0, the hosts’ second win in a row, with Japan forward Takefusa Kubo playing well from the start. After spending last season with Getafe, Kubo returned to Mallorca on loan from Real Madrid.
In the 27th minute, Dani Rodrguez scored the game-winning goal after Espanyol’s defenders failed to clear the ball inside the area. After two consecutive 0-0 draws, Espanyol’s defender Sergi Gómez was sent off in injury time for a foul to stop a breakaway. Mallorca was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Real Betis in its first game.
