La Liga: Last-minute goals helped Real Madrid win over Valencia

Real Madrid secured a 2-1 win away from the home match at the Mestalla stadium against one of their toughest rivals Valencia. The visitors started quite active with some chances from Eden Hazard and Casemiro early on in their Spanish League football match.

As Carlos Soler and Thierry Correia were replaced due to injuries Valencia was forced into two changes within 20 minutes. At the end of the half, ‘The Bats’ had the best chance to go ahead right as Gabriel Paulista’s header was denied by Thibaut Courtois, keeping the scoreline at 0-0 going into halftime.

Real Madrid failed to clear their lines after the break following a cross while Hugo Duro took full advantage of this, heading the ball into the bottom corner, giving Valencia a lead in the 66th minute. Real Madrid almost replied instantly, with Karim Benzema and substitute Rodrygo forcing Giorgi Mamardashvili into making two excellent saves.

With 4 minutes remaining on the clock, Los Blancos did not lose hope to equalize and Vinicius Junior’s deflected shot went past a helpless goalie. In addition, Real took a 2-1 lead just 2 minutes later when Karim Benzema added his name on the scoreboard hitting his 198th La Liga goal, completing a late comeback for the new La Liga leaders.

Ancelotti on Real Madrid win over Valencia

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has given a brief commentary following the La Liga fifth-round clash against Valencia at the Mestalla. “We played well on the counter, we had good combinations but we didn’t defend well, we weren’t aggressive, we were always at the back. That’s what happens, you get a ball in and they score,” the Italian stated, Marca reports football news.

“But the personality was very good, the wear and tear on Valencia was very high, I put freshness on the pitch and we gained control of the game. We won because of the spirit that the players have and the ability to keep our heads high all the time. The spirit was the key to winning. The substitutes did very well, they changed the game,” Ancelotti added.

“We are lucky to have Karim [Benzema] and Vini [Vinicius], the team needs this type of players. I am also very satisfied with [Eden] Hazard and [Eduardo] Camavinga when he came on. But we have to improve our defensive control”.
