French and Real Madrid star footballer Karim Benzema, a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or Award, has been sentenced to one year in prison. Along with this, a fine of Rs 62 lakh has also been imposed on him. In fact, he has been sentenced for threatening to make the sex tape viral. In 2015, Benzema was among those threatening to make the sex-tape case of Mathieu Valbuena of the France team viral. However, this decision of the court is less likely to harm Benzema’s career.
He also plays for Real Madrid and he made his football team champion this year by scoring a hat-trick goal. He also did a great job this season and he is a major contender for the Ballon d’Or award to be announced in Paris on 29 November.
The lawyer of this star footballer said that he will appeal. Benzema was denying these allegations from the beginning. He was not present in the court both at the time of hearing of the case last month and on the day of the verdict. Apart from him, 4 other people were also convicted. All four of them were also not present in the court. Now, as a result, Karim Benzema will be sidelined for a year after being sentenced to prison.
Benzema was dropped from the French national team by coach Didier Deschamps in 2015 following initial allegations. Due to which he could not play the European Championship in 2016. He was also not a part of the team that won the World Cup in 2018.
