Joan Laporta: Barcelona refused to sign Ronaldo for Ronaldinho

In 2003 Barcelona could have contracted Cristiano Ronaldo but did not grab the opportunity, said former Blaugrana president Joan Laporta.

“We were going to sign Ronaldinho and Rafael Marquez. Marquez’s entourage offered us Ronaldo, who was playing for Sporting at that time,” quotes Laporta Marca.

“One of the agents said they had a player they were selling to Manchester United for 19 million [euros], but they would have sold him to us for 17 million.”

“But by this point, we had already invested in buying Ronaldinho. Cristiano was more of a flank player than a centre player. We thought we had everything covered, so we gave up Ronaldo, which I don’t regret.”
