Jesus and Sterling’s goals helped Manchester City win over Burnley

Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling scored goals that kept Manchester City at the top of the Premier League and gave them their 13th consecutive win. Now, with a superior goal difference and a game in hand, they lead Manchester United by three points.

A plan that lasted three minutes until the game, Sean Dyche must have preferred his players to remain in it for as long as possible and give nothing up for free; Sterling barged through Matt Lowton and fed Bernardo Silva, whose shot was nasty but not conclusive, just Nick Pope flapped it on the head of Jesus and he was unable to miss it.

Burnley was a game that, for the most part, defended the box well, but were still totally outmatched and stayed 15th.

The second half featured nothing more than the passing of time; City could have scored more but did not push the issue, so the possibility of Burnley assembling an assault was impossible, never mind a chance. But once again, the speed with which they disposed of traditionally doughty rivals will not have been wasted on the chasing pack.

Sterling tapping in Ilkay Gundogan’s excellent cross and City scored again, just as it seemed like Burnley might head into the break with a chance of getting something out of the match.

Burnley – Manchester City 0-2

Goals: Jesus (3), Sterling (38)

Burnley: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Pieters, Gudmundsson, Westwood (Benson 81), Cork (Stephens 71), McNeil, Rodriguez (Mumbongo 77), Vydra.
