Inter defeated Sheriff Tiraspol to secure first Champions League win

Inter secured their first win of the Champions League group stage as they defeated Sheriff Tiraspol and ended their improbable 100 percent record at San Siro on Tuesday night. Inter dominated the first half of the football match, and after a quarter-hour, wing-back Denzel Dumfries broke through on a scorching counterattack, but he couldn’t get his feet together and was smothered by the keeper.

Over 10 minutes before the break, Federico Dimarco’s beautiful free-kick was tipped, giving the visitors the lead. Arturo Vidal flicked on a header from the subsequent corner to the unmarked Edin Dzeko, who showed superb technique to volley into the top corner with his instep. Both Ivan Perisic and Dzeko had fantastic efforts saved, ahead of the break before Sheriff stunned the footballing world once more.

Before Dzeko turned provider a minute later, Inter quickly replied, with Perisic hitting the outside of the post, slipping the ball through Arturo Vidal, who squeezed the ball past the goalkeeper to restore the hosts’ lead. The Nerazzurri enjoyed a two-goal lead after nine minutes. Dumfries headed a corner back across goal, where centre-back Stefan de Vrij volleyed in with a striker’s finish.

Inter were comfortable after that and saw the game out, though they came close to adding a fourth when Perisic and Lautaro Martinez got in each other’s way but still managed to rattle the crossbar with a joint effort, before Sensi’s good effort went narrowly wide and Martinez’s last-minute volley was tipped over.
