Indian women’s footballer Manisha positive despite 1-6 loss to Brazil

Indian women’s footballer Manisha Kalyan has termed the goal scored in the football match against Brazil in the 4-nation tournament in Manaus as ‘sweet cake’. Manisha scored the only goal for the Indian women’s team. India did not allow the strong Brazil team to score many goals till the end of the first half, although they later lost 1-6 on football results.

Winger Manisha scored India’s equalizer in the eighth minute with a left foot before Debora Oliveira gave the 2007 World Cup runners-up the lead in the first minute of the match. Manisha said that “it was a dream come true for me to play against Brazil and scoring a goal against them was ‘sone pe suhaga’.”

After the match, Manisha was seen photographing Brazilian midfielder, Formiga Mota. She said that “being on the same pitch with her (Formiga) was a huge achievement. I hope we can learn from this experience and do better in the next match.”

She said that “we knew that it would be difficult to compete against a team like Brazil. But as soon as we got on the field, we forgot about the pressure. We have to do the same in the upcoming matches and play without any pressure.”

Like many women footballers in the world, Manisha’s journey here has been full of challenges. Describing the difficulties of her career, Manisha comes from the small village of Mugoval in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab said that “I have been playing since I was 13 years old. I decided to switch from athletics to football on the advice of my coach Brahji sir.”

“It was very interesting for me to see ‘teamwork’ in football and I fell in love with the game.” No one in her village supported her decision to become a footballer but she got full support of her parents.
