Indian footballer Anirudh Thapa aims to improve scoring rate

Indian young footballer Anirudh Thapa said that he is looking to capitalize on the opportunities, improve the scoring rate, and adjust to different situations during the matches. The 23-year-old midfielder is currently practicing in Doha with the Indian football team ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 and Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers to be held in Qatar next month.

Thapa told the All India Football Federation (AIFF) that “I need to improve on many aspects. I have to capitalize on more opportunities. I know that I can do better and need to learn to adjust to the changing circumstances during the match. For example, there may be some stages when we need to play straight football. In such a situation, I have to go a little further and create more opportunities.”

Anirudh Thapa said that but at the same time, it would have to be seen that the space in the middle line is not left empty. “I am learning to balance. I have to move forward after seeing the position of the players behind me,” he added. The Indian team finished fourth in Group E with three points. The team has been out of the race for a place in the World Cup but the hopes of a place in the Asian Cup remain. India’s first match will be against host and Asian champions Qatar on June 3. After this, the team will take on Bangladesh on 7 June and Afghanistan on 15 June.

The last time the Indian team faced Qatar was on its soil. The match was a goalless draw. Thapa said that “it is 18 months old, now the situation is different but we know that Qatar is eagerly waiting for this match. We know that we have to do well on the field as we do not want to be disappointed. The team have not come here just to increase the number. We have confidence in our abilities and are focusing on one match at a time.”
