Indian football team free from quarantine in Qatar, set to leave on May 19

The Indian football team will not have to go through 10 days of tough quarantine when they reach Qatar for the training camp and qualifier for the 2022 World Cup in June. The quarantine period for the Indian football team has been waived off by the Qatar government, giving it a period of roughly two weeks to train ahead of the World Cup/Asian Cup qualifying match scheduled on June 3 in Doha.

According to a report by, the Indian contingent would have to live in a biosecure environment and strictly follow the Covid-19 protocol implemented by the organizers. The Indian team is preparing for matches and can start training soon after arriving in Qatar.

Indian Football Team wrote on Twitter: “The #BlueTigers will soon be leaving for Qatar for the preparatory camp ahead of the June Qualifiers. The final departure date will be announced soon, once official confirmation from the health authorities is received.”

On May 19 the Indian football team will travel to Qatar after they received a big relief from the gulf country as the government accepted All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) request to allow its players to train there ahead of the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers next month.

AIFF general secretary Kushal Das said “We are planning to fly the team on May 19 evening. There will be no quarantine (of the players) and they will be in a bio-bubble.”

According to Goal, the Blue Tigers would have to produce a negative coronavirus test result before assembling in Delhi and then another test before leaving for Qatar. While India is not considering a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, matches against Qatar, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are crucial in the 2023 Asian Cup.

In early March, the Indian team played two friendly matches against Oman and UAE. India drew the game against Oman, and coach Igor Stimac was genuinely pleased with the team’s efforts.
