The 2021-22 Hero I-League season is set to begin on Sunday, December 26 at Mohun Bagan, Kolkata, where NEROCA FC will take on Indian Arrows at 14:00. This season’s I-League matches will be played at three venues of Kolkata – Mohun Bagan Ground, Kalyani Stadium, and Naihati Stadium. The number of teams in the I-League has increased this season, up to 13 teams participating in the league, and all of this, with referees, officials and volunteers, will be hosted in a bio-secure bubble.
All India Football Federation (AIFF) published a statement on the upcoming Indian football League. “AIFF has been a leader in the Indian sports ecosystem in hosting sporting events within an organic bubble and we are pleased to continue to provide a safe haven for players, referees, and all who lead the league,” said I-League CEO Sunando Dhar.
“We have three new teams in the Hero I-League this season and I would like to congratulate Sreenidhi Deccan FC, Rajasthan United FC, and Kenkre FC along with a big welcome message to all the other 10 teams playing in the league. We must also thank all our partners, as the logistical and financial effort to host 13 teams in Bio-Bubble for the entire season would not have been possible without their help.”
According to the format of the football tournament, all teams would play against each other only once in a round-robin format in Stage 1 before the league was split into two groups in Stage 2 – the first seven teams in Group A and the bottom six in Group A. B will make
Once the division is done after the end of Phase I, the teams from each group will play against each other in a round-robin format with a single leg. While Group A teams will play to determine the champion, Group B teams will battle for relegation.
