Manchester City attacker Ferran Torres will be out for two to three months with a broken metatarsal, according to Pep Guardiola. Last week while playing for Spain at the UEFA Nations League finals football match Torres suffered an injury. He injured his foot in the first half of his team’s semi-final victory over Italy, where he scored twice.
Shortly after the half-time break, he was eventually substituted, but he returned to start and play 84 minutes in the final, which Spain lost to France. He had a scan after that game, and while it had been thought that he would be back in contention in six weeks, Guardiola has now acknowledged that the break will be much longer.
“Injuries can happen here, home, national team. It happens. I know the manager from Spain, he treats Ferran [Torres] as best as possible, doesn’t want him to get injured. They try to take care, sometimes it happens. It happened with Kevin and Phil,” he said at the press conference. “Would be better not to, but it happens. We move forward, and when he [Ferran Torres] comes back, recovers after two or three months, try to be ready.”
As Torres has shown early promise in a false nine role this season, Guardiola has been dealt a major blow by the announcement. The club is hoping that the Spaniard can mature into a top-flight centre-forward, and his recent international displays have hinted that he has the ability to do so. City is likely to stick with Jack Grealish or Phil Foden as the attacking trio’s central frontman with Torres out of the picture.
