Greenwood picks one in Messi Ronaldo debate

Mason Greenwood gave his vote in the never-ending debate – Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? He chose only one clear winner. Mason Greenwood weighed in on a classic modern football debate, claiming that Lionel Messi is superior to Cristiano Ronaldo.

The pair have competed for individual glory since the Portugal captain left Manchester United in 2009, and Luka Modric, who quit in 2018, is the only player other than Ronaldo or Messi to win the Ballon d’Or since Kaka in 2007.

On the other hand, football player Mason Greenwood points to the class of six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi as he believes there is a simple answer to the debate. “For me, it’s always got to be Messi,” the United academy product told an exclusive Red Devils’ fans Q&A session. “For me, he’s just on another planet.”

Talking about Juventus striker, the Englishman said, “Ronaldo is obviously amazing, a physical, great athletic footballer. But to do what Messi does at his size, what he’s done for Barcelona and winning that trophy for Argentina, he is just on another level.”

Overlooking one Ronaldo, given his strong ties to United, may come as something as a surprise, but Greenwood admits to taking inspiration from another. He added on his favourite skill, which was once favoured by the iconic Brazil international striker: “My favourite skill move was the stepover and I still use it to this day.”

“It’s my favourite skill move. I used to watch the Brazilian Ronaldo, as he would always pull one out on the goalkeepers and defenders. I used to practice at the parks and stuff and used to do it in training sessions, then that would lead on to games. Now, it’s just stuck with me, it’s a little skill move that I practice.”

The 19-year-old forward, who picks Messi, has scored 17 goals in 65 appearances for Manchester United since joining the senior team in 2018 after playing in the youth team of the Red Devils for 11 years.
