Goalkeeper Rui Patricio joined Roma from Wolverhampton

Serie A side Roma has signed Premier League goalkeeper Rui Patricio from Wolverhampton, confirmed both clubs on Tuesday. Portugal player has agreed to a football transfer to Roma.

The Romans have signed the 33-year-old Wolverhampton goalkeeper for an €11.5 million ($13.54 million) transfer fee including bonuses. Last season Roma finished seventh in the Serie A table and had signed Tottenham Hotspur coach Jose Mourinho as their new manager. Since the appointment of Mourinho as coach Patricio is Rome’s first new signing this summer.

In the EPL last season, Rui played 37 games, 11 of them on clean sheet, for Wolves. He has missed only two Premier League games in his three-year stint. It is noted that he was aiming to play under the Portuguese manager. “In Jose Mourinho, we are talking about one of the greatest coaches in the world and I am excited to start working with him and doing everything I can to help the team,” he said.

“Roma is a big club and a new challenge and I’m excited to try and help the club achieve its targets,” he added. Patricio’s national team – Portugal saw an early exit from Euro 2020 losing to Belgum in last-16.

“Rui Patricio brings with him a huge amount of success with the Portuguese national team and a number of successful seasons in the Premier League in which he only underlined his quality,” said Roma general manager Tiago Pinto. “We are certain that our group of players will benefit from the arrival of a goalkeeper with such an array of international experience to call upon.”

Wolves technical director Scott Sellars said, “(Patricio) has been part of the best years of the club’s recent history… coming to us when we were newly promoted and helping the club to achieve two seventh-place finishes. He’s been a fantastic servant to the club, but it’s a fantastic opportunity for him to experience a new club in a new league, and a good move for everybody involved.”
