France assured that Finland would not be making their World Cup debut in Qatar with goals from Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe. Relegating the Nordic country to third place in UEFA qualifying Group D France ruined Finland’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time with a 2-0 football results win in Helsinki.
In the 25th minute, France had a chance to score a goal but the goalkeeper Hradecky denied it. Mbappé’s shot went just wide of the right post in the 29th minute. The first half of the match ended in a goalless draw. However, in the 66th minute of the second half, Karim Benzema took the lead, and 10 minutes later Kylian Mbappe doubled the lead to 2-0.
The focus in the group was on the battle between Finland and Ukraine for a place in the playoffs with France’s spot in Qatar 2022 already assured. With a two-point lead over Ukraine, Finland started the night, but the situation changed dramatically in the second half.
In another match, Ukraine defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 thanks to goals from Oleksandr Zinchenko and Artem Dovbyk, while the reigning world champions claimed all three points thanks to a deflected shot from Karim Benzema and a brilliant solo effort from Kylian Mbappe as Finland faltered at the penultimate hurdle.
