Football players signed petition for an independent regulator in English football

Many former footballers have launched a parliamentary petition for an independent regulator in English football. Football players Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Lineker are among 23 former players and journalists who have signed a petition, an open letter to fans. They claim that the European Super League attempted a break in April, demonstrating the need to improve the governance of the game.

The petition was signed by more than 20,000 people in the first hour. To be considered for parliamentary debate, 100,000 signatures are required.

“As football fans, we were constrained by the effort to establish a European Super League,” writes the letter, which was also signed by Jamie Redknapp and Micah Richards.

“It was a direct threat to the integrity of the game; Dismantling the concept of sports competence and open competition. Supporters have come together in one voice to protest the blatant seizure of power by a group of landlords. The furious protest was heard, and the breakup broke out.”

“We must now ensure that this never happens again. Without quick and direct intervention, the withdrawal of a European Super League would be a constant threat. ”

“We welcome a fan-led review of the game and hope that it will lead to permanent changes to a number of important concerns; Including coordinated strategies to deal with racism, club representation, LGBTQ issues, ticket costs and income distribution. All these goals can be achieved if we take decisive action now” the letter added.

In addition to an independent regulatory body, the petition also calls for government legislation to prevent Premier League clubs from trying to leave the football pyramid.

Following protests from fans, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham withdrew from the European Super League within 48 hours of launch.

The move has been criticized by the British government, which has given a fan-led review of English football that will consider ownership, finance and fan participation in the sport.
