FA Cup

Middlesbrough FC 1-0 Tottenham

Josh Coburn was the hero, the teenage substitute striking early in the second half of extra-time to give Middlesbrough FC a dramatic 1-0 victory over Tottenham.

Advancing to the FA Cup quarter-finals, Boro has beaten multiple top-flight teams as a second-tier side in the same campaign for the first time since 1991-92.

Yet another defeat is bound to heap further pressure on Spurs and Antonio Conte.

Anfernee Dijksteel, Dael Fry, Paddy McNair;

Isaiah Jones, Matt Crooks, Jonny Howson (captain), Marcus Tavernier, Neil Taylor;

1-0 MIDDLESBROUGH! The teenage substitute provides the breakthrough! Coburn latches onto Crooks’ neat through ball and thumps it past a helpless Lloris. Spurs appeal for offside, but Emerson appeared to be playing the goalscorer on.

What does it mean? One step forward and two steps back for Spurs.

Spurs beat Manchester City, then lost to Burnley. That led to an outburst from Conte that made it look like he was about to walk. Then he calmed down, they beat Leeds United 4-0, and the coach was all jolly again.

It will be interesting to see how he reacts to this defeat, as it was arguably worse than the Burnley one – at least they share a division with the Clarets.

At the Riverside, Middlesbrough was up for an honest scrap, personified by captain Jonny Howson, whereas Spurs struggled to impose themselves for long stretches, which will be a concern for Conte.

So, where else do Middlesbrough FC and Tottenham go from here?

Middlesbrough will look to build on their momentum when they host Luton Town in the Championship on Saturday.

Two days later, Tottenham aim to get back to winning ways against Everton in the Premier League.
