Paris Saint-Germain got their season off to the worst possible start with a 1-0 loss to Lille in the French Super Cup. Xeca scored a screamer for Lille who beat Paris Saint-Germain by the solitary point in the league last season. Mauricio Pochettino did not have Neymar and Mbappe but put out an experienced side with the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Ander Herrera, and Mauro Icardi in the lineup.
PSG have won the Super Cup- a match between the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France – for the past eight seasons. Lille too has had a change of manager with Guingamp boss Jocelyn Gourvennec replacing Christophe Galtier. Burak Yilmaz laid the ball off to Xeca whose strike was still rising when it hit the back of the net. Keylor Navas could not do anything about the thunderbolt.
Georginio Wijnaldum was a second-half substitute for PSG and the Dutchman almost had an immediate impact when he set up Icardi but the former Inter Milan striker’s finish was ruled out for offside. Lille goalkeeper Leo Jardim helped weather a late storm as Lille celebrated their first success in the competition following defeats in 1955 and 2011.
