FIFA fined Hungarian FA and imposed fans ban for two games

The Hungarian Football Association (FA) has been fined again by FIFA after their supporters’ directed racist abuse on England players during the two teams’ World Cup qualifier earlier this month.

On that night England on 4-0 match score but the occasion was marred by racist abuse from a section of the Hungarian fans. A majority of vulgarity was directed at goalscorer Raheem Sterling and fans also targeted young Jude Bellingham. Cups and other projectiles were also thrown onto the pitch, prompting Declan Rice and Jack Grealish to post iconic photos of themselves drinking in the face of the abuse.

An investigation was launched immediately into the incident by FIFA and the governing body has since confirmed on their official website that Hungary was found guilty of racially abusing England players during the game.

The Hungarian FA are ordered to play two games behind-closed-doors without fans in competitions and FIFA has also fined them under £160,000, with the latter suspended for two years.

“FIFA’s position remains firm and resolute in rejecting any form of racism and violence as well as any other form of discrimination or abuse,” a statement read. “FIFA takes a clear zero-tolerance stance against such abhorrent behaviour in football.”

This means that for the match against Albania on 9 October Hungary will be without fans but in November if there is no further fan unrest then supporters will be able to return to see their country face San Marino.

In between those two games, the team will face England at Wembley Stadium on October 12th. The Three Lions lead their World Cup qualifying group and have yet to lose a game, having won five and drawn one of their first six matches.
