FC Goa scored in the 89th minute yet lose the chance to become the first Indian club to win the prestigious AFC Champions League. FC Goa played a 1–1 match draw against Al-Rayyan of Qatar on Monday. In the Group E match, George Ortiz gave FC Goa the lead in the third minute, but Ali Ferydoon scored an equalizer in the 89th minute to level the score 1–1.
In the first half, most of the ball was in possession of Al-Rayyan, but in the second session, the fight was exciting. Indian Super League team FC Goa missed out on a knockout berth when UAE’s Al Wahda defeated last season’s runners-up Persepolis FC 1–0 in another Group E match.
Persepolis FC still tops the group with 12 points, while Al Wahda is in second place with 10 points. FC Goa is third with 3 points and Al-Rayyan is at the last spot with two points.
FC Goa performance so far in AFC Champions League
The four teams in Group E have one match each in the double round robin league. Explain that the top five teams and the three best runners-up teams will enter the final-16 knockout stage. FC Goa played a 0–0 draw in the first leg match with Al-Rayyan. After this, Goa also played a goalless draw match with Al Wahda.
The Goa team then suffered a 1-2 and 0-4 defeat in the double header by Persepolis FC. FC Goa’s last match will be against Al Wahda on Thursday, which is just a formality for them.
However, during the tournament, Goa showed amazing defense and Dheeraj was fully prepared for the challenge. He made a great defense in the 9th minute. FC Goa maintained their lead in the first half while the ball was mostly held by Al Ryan. After this, the contest was exciting in the second session. The two teams entered each other’s quarters several times to score goals. Strikers from both teams also made several attempts to score goals, but none were getting success.
However, in the 89th minute, Ali Ferydoon managed to score. Abdulaziz Hatem passed the cross, which dodged Dheeraj and gave Ali Ferydoon a great chance to score. In this case, the score was equal to 1-1. This was a big setback for FC Goa as they had the chance to become the first Indian club to win the AFC Champions League.
