Euro 2020 host Bilbao and Dublin eliminated

Bilbao and Dublin have been eliminated from the Euro 2020 host. Matches from both cities will be played in Seville, St. Petersburg, and London respectively. The tournament will be played from June 11 in 24 countries. According to UEFA, Euro 2020 matches initially planned for Bilbao and Dublin will be relocated to other venues.

Not being guaranteed enough fanfare at the stadium, Bilbao and Dublin were eliminated on Friday as host cities for this year’s European Championships, and matches were moved to Seville, St. Petersburg, and London.

A change in plans to host 24 cities for the Euro 2020 tournament in 12 cities starting in Rome on June 11 comes at a time when there are only seven weeks left. The decision was first revealed by Poland’s Football Federation president Jabigniew Bonyuk, who posted it on his Twitter account when he was attending a meeting of the Uefa Executive Committee.

Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Slovakia had to play their Group-E matches in Spain and Ireland. Uefa selected Bilbao and Dublin in 2014, but their locations were in jeopardy, as officials there could not guarantee fans who were present in the midst of the coronavirus epidemic.

The three matches to be held in Bilbao will now take place in Seville, Spain. Already set to host four matches in the tournament, St. Petersburg will now host three Group-E matches from Dublin. The round of 16 match in Dublin has been hosted for London, which will now host eight matches at Wembley Stadium. The Euro 2020 event was postponed for a year due to the coronavirus.

Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA said: “We have been working diligently with the host associations and local authorities to ensure a safe and festive environment at the games and I am really pleased that we are able to welcome spectators at all matches for a celebration of national team football across the continent.”

“UEFA wishes to express its appreciation and gratitude to the cities of Bilbao and Dublin – both of which are considered as good venues to host future UEFA events – the national and regional governments of Spain and the Republic of Ireland, and all local stakeholders for their dedication, professionalism, and efforts over the past years.”

“UEFA would also like to thank the Football Association of Ireland and its dedicated staff for their excellent collaboration and hard work, and is looking forward to continuing to work with the remaining eleven host associations in delivering UEFA EURO 2020 matches.”
