England players faced racial abuse during WC qualifiers match

England players were subjected to racial abuse during their 4-0 win over Hungary in the World Cup Qualifiers football match. Hungary fans disturbed England players yet they managed to dominate and secured a victory with four goals. UEFA had previously ordered Hungary to play the next three home games behind closed doors during Euro 2020 after discriminatory fan behavior, but the ban has not yet been implemented.

Spectators threw bottles and beers on England players during each goal celebration, Declan Rice and Jack Grealish jokingly pretended to drink from them. A rocket was also thrown on the pitch while the team celebrated Harry Maguire’s goal.

FIFA said, “First of all, FIFA strongly rejects racism and violence of any kind and has a very clear position of zero tolerance for such behavior in football. FIFA will take appropriate action as soon as it receives the match report for tomorrow’s match between Hungary and England. With regard to the previous UEFA ban against Hungary, please note that, as specified by UEFA at the time, this ban will be applied in UEFA competitions.”

In a statement, the English Football Association (FA) said it was “extremely disappointing” to hear reports of “discriminatory actions” against some of its players. “We will ask FIFA to investigate the matter,” the statement said. “We continue to support the players and staff in our collective determination to expose and combat discrimination in all forms.”

England and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire wrote on Instagram: “Since last night’s match, I’ve talked to my teammates and watched some footage. Any discrimination is completely unacceptable, and the authorities must analyze it. Racism doesn’t happen in our sport or society.”

The Hungarian Football Federation said: “The vast majority of the 60,000 fans at Puskas Arena supported the teams in a sporty manner, praising the Hungarian national team even when the team was already losing. It is in defense. The minority of disruptive ticket holders should be identified and punished severely.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote on Twitter: “It is completely unacceptable that English players have been racially abused in Hungary. tomorrow night. I urge FIFA to take strong action against those who are responsible for ensuring that this type of shameful behavior is permanently eradicated from the sport.”
