Atletico Madrid pulled off a big win as they host Real Sociedad at Wanda Metropolitano, defeating the opponents at 2-1 score. The Madrid team moves closer to the La Liga title. Diego Simeone’s side managed to fortify their lead retaining the top position in the La Liga table. The 51-year-old coach commented on Atletico Madrid’s title-clinching victory over Real Sociedad at home. Diego Simeone admitted that he knew Atletico Madrid had to win after the La Liga leaders defeated Real Sociedad.
“We knew that we had to win,” Atletico head coach Simeone told reporters, according to the Marca. “We were ahead in the game against a team that were doing things well, especially away from home.”
“The first half was pretty good, we took a 2-0 lead, we had enough chances to have a bigger advantage. Up until the 25th minute of the second half the game was open and at the end of the season winning is very important and then their goal happened as did those last few minutes. We were left with the feeling that we suffered in those last few minutes because of Sociedad’s desire to try and get a draw.”
“We had a great first half and second half as well, but in this tight end of the season, their goal made us really suffer in those last few minutes. We need to rest. It’s been a very tough season and it’s going to be tough until the end. It started too fast and it’s something that’s affected all teams, we’re not the exception. We continue, game-by-game, knowing Sunday will be another important and difficult game”
In the Spanish capital midweek, Yannick Carrasco and Angel Correa scored in the space of 12 first-half minutes to hand Atletico a 2-0 lead within half an hour.
Igor Zubeldia set up a thrilling finish for Real Sociedad, but Atletico Madrid held on to go four points clear at the top of the table with two rounds remaining, while city rivals Real Madrid could close the gap to two points if they beat Granada on Thursday.
