Details around Barcelona’s Dismissal of Ronald Koeman

Barcelona sacked Ronald Koeman as their coach while he was still on the plane home, we have found out now. We already knew the firing followed the club’s La Liga loss to Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday night (the football news). But now, some more specific details around Barcelona’s dismissal of Ronald Koeman are coming out – and it’s looking ugly.

A solitary goal from veteran striker Radamel Falcao in Madrid condemned Koeman’s Barça to their third defeat in four games.

The Dutchman survived intense pressure earlier in the season due to most every match result being disappointing.

However, this saga regardless ended in Barca firing Koeman suddenly and under strange circumstances. But what, exactly, were these circumstances?

Details around Barcelona’s Dismissal of Ronald Koeman:

Less than three hours after Barcelona’s game against Rayo Vallecano ended, Barca announced Dutchman Ronald Koeman’s abrupt departure as coach.

Not only was the decision to fire Koeman made on the flight home, but the Dutchman was also legally removed from his duties before he even landed, as first reported by Sport.

This means that Koeman stepped off the plane knowing that he would not be returning to work on Thursday morning.

And just shortly after, Barcelona officially announced their abrupt decision.

Barça authorities had previously opted against dismissing Koeman due to the financial repercussions. That was, after all, a time when the club was facing major financial difficulties.

Despite this, Barcelona president and chairman Joan Laporta allegedly gathered other directors on the aircraft home from the Vallecano game. This is a shocking revelation, and all the more so because Koeman was sitting only a few rows away.

The president wasted no time in informing his colleagues as he made his decision, to fire the 58-year-old, ‘immediately’.

Koeman had thus lost his job before the jet had even landed in Barcelona. Such conditions must have resulted in an exceedingly difficult descent, landing, and disembarkation.

Meanwhile, Barcelona have already named Sergi Barjuan as a temporary successor, the interim manager (latest football transfer news).

The retired left-back is a former Barça player who played briefly with Koeman at Camp Nou in the early 1990s.

And before returning as the Barcelona B head coach earlier this year, Barjuan worked as a La Masia youth coach. This position he held until 2011.
