Despite 2-1 win, Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace wasn’t enough to save Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace wasn’t enough to save Juventus from a Champions League exit at the hands of Lyon, despite winning 2-1 in Turin.

Juventus began the match with speculation that defeat would result in their manager Maurizio Sarri being sacked.

After Rodrigo Bentancur dropped Houssem Aouar in the first half early Memphis Depay missed a penalty and everything seemed bleak for the former manager of Chelsea.

This left Juve requiring at least three goals, and they were given optimism just before half-time when Miralem Pjanic’s freekick hit Memphis’ arm, and the ref handed down a gracious penalty. Cristiano Ronaldo leveled.

With a shot from Ronaldo’s left foot in the second half, Juve went ahead the night ensuring they required a single goal to grab the lead on aggregate.

After a recurrence of his thigh injury, Dybala played only over 10 minutes when Sarri brought on Paulo Dybala and Aaron Ramsey as they were chasing the tie. It wasn’t enough-Lyon held their nerve and this could be Sarri’s goodbye whilst they’re progressing.

Lyon will face Manchester City, who played simultaneously at the Etihad Stadium.
