Cristiano Ronaldo will wear his iconic no. 7 shirt after his return to Manchester United, the club has confirmed the football news. The Red Devils had already announced their squad numbers, despite that United has asked the Premier League for special permission to give Cristiano Ronaldo the number seven jersey this season. During the allotment of numbers for the new season, Edison Cavani was given the number 7 shirt.
The Portuguese expressed his gratitude to his teammate Edinson Cavani who wore the number 7 shirt and now agreed to switch to the number 21. “I wasn’t sure if it would be possible to have the number seven shirt again, so I would like to say a huge thank you to Edi for this incredible gesture,” – said Cristiano.
The 36-year-old has almost always worn the famous number seven since joining the Premier League in 2003, only switching to the number nine for a season at Real Madrid due to the presence of club legend Raul.
Ronaldo represented Man United between 2003 and 2009 scoring 118 goals in 292 appearances for the club. And, according to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils want Ronaldo to reclaim the shirt he wore during his first stint at Old Trafford, and have asked the Premier League for permission to reallocate the jersey to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Premier League rule M.4 states that: “While he remains with the club, a player will retain his shirt number throughout the season for which it was allocated,” meaning that the number seven should remain with Cavani until next season.
Following the departure of former owner Daniel James, Cavani, who wears the number ’21’ for Uruguay, could now be given the same number at the domestic level if Man Utd is granted the special dispensation.
Cavani could now be seen wearing the number 21, which he wears for Uruguay, following the departure of Daniel James, who left the club on Tuesday in a football transfer to Leeds United.
