Football fans remembered a clear goal from Cristiano Ronaldo, who was banned in the same football match in March 2021. Had this goal been awarded, Portugal would have overtaken Serbia in goal difference. FIFA does not use VAR or goal-line technology in qualifying, so the goal was never to stand.
So far, many teams have qualified for the football World Cup through the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Serbia, Spain, and Croatia have qualified for next year’s World Cup in Qatar, but Sweden, Portugal, and Russia will have to wait.
Aleksandar Mitrovic’s 90th-minute header sent Cristiano Ronaldo and his side Portugal in jeopardy as Serbia went straight into the World Cup with a 2-1 win in the match in Lisbon. Portugal needed only a draw to qualify but Mitrovic’s goal dashed their hopes. Serbia topped Group A with this win. Portugal still has a chance to qualify, but to make it to the top four teams in the playoffs in March.
For Portugal, Renato Sanchez had put them in a strong position with a goal in the second minute but Dusan Tadic managed to equalize for Serbia in the 33rd minute. The spectators and the Portuguese players were disappointed by Mitrovic’s header. Among them was Ronaldo who sat down on the field sadly after the final whistle. In another Group A match, Ireland beat Luxembourg 3–0.
