Chelsea will continue their campaign despite sanctions on their owners

Gary Cotterill says UEFA is confident that Chelsea will continue their Champions League campaign despite Roman Abramovich’s broader sanctions.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Cotterill provided an update on the team’s status within the competition they a due to compete in tonight against Lille.

Why wouldn’t Chelsea be able to compete in the Champions League?

After the UK government froze Abramovich’s assets, the EU placed a similar punishment upon the Russian’s shoulders.

Some feared this might directly affect the involvement of Thomas Tuchel’s men in Europe.

Chelsea will defend their title this evening at Lille’s home to continue their title defence.

The Blues held a 2-0 advantage secured at Stamford Bridge last month, thanks to Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic.

Travel trauma

Their ability to fulfil away fixtures continues to be discussed, as they only have a budget of £20,0000 (Goal) per game on the road.

They had already organised travel plans for this evening’s encounter with the Ligue 1 side.

Yet the EU sanctions of Abramovich have cast fresh doubts over the contest.

However, Cotterill ensured fans of the European champions that their journey across the continent will only end if they lose today, not because of outside inference.

“As I understand it, the EU wants to punish Abramovich but don’t want to punish Chelsea,” he said.

“UEFA officials and the EU were having discussions, and This match is 100% sure to happen.

And believe that negotiations are going well that if Chelsea gets through, they can continue to play in the Champions League and maybe came back to France in May for the Champions League final.”

Since that victory, the club has been put up for sale and subsequently plunged into uncertainty due to the restrictions implemented by the government.

The senior squad would have had to cling to the FA Cup without European glory, but this has provided its strain of dramas.

Due to their away match with Middlesbrough being denied tickets, Chelsea requested to play the game with no fans.

They quickly retracted their demands, but Sanctions had already done the damage.
