Chelsea will play in the Champions League final against Manchester City, as goals from Timo Werner and Mason Mount defeated Real Madrid 2–0 on Wednesday to win the overall 3–1 win over Stamford Bridge.
In any case, the score line flattened Madrid, as the 13-time European champion had no reaction to Chelsea’s pace in retaliation. Playing with a tired audience in the second half, the Blues should have had a more assured winner.
However, a header emptied by Wener on 28 minutes after Kai Havertz’s initial effort rebounded from the cross overbar and significantly limited his place in Istanbul on 29 May in the tap-in five minutes of Mount from the end.
Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane welcomed captain Sergio Ramos from injury for the first time in six weeks, while Aiden Hazard made a rare start to a season-ridden injury on his return to Stamford Bridge. But the Belgian was again a peripheral figure, as Madrid’s over-confidence in Karim Benzema was exposed to provide the goal threat.
Madrid came away with a goal and moments later they were behind, with Werner scoring only the fourth goal in his final 39 games. N’Golo Kante and Havertz clashed as the French midfielder Kai Havertz, whose bold face on Thibaut Courtois jumped from the crossbar to head into an empty net for Werner.
Chelsea has now kept 18 clean sheets in 24 games as Tuchel’s appointment changed their season. However, the failure to risk their opportunities at the other end means they are still far from getting a guaranteed place in the next season of the Champions League.
Tuchel was increasingly frustrated by his inability to put his team to bed, but he was finally able to rest for five minutes. Christian Pulisic’s replacement left Courtois on the floor and, from his cut-out, Mount finished from a distance.
Rejected by Paris Saint-Germain on Christmas Eve, after leading the French champions to their first finals of this competition last season, Tuchel, unlike his former club PSG who were beaten 4-1 by City in the other semi-finals, returned to a Champions League match for a second consecutive season.
Chelsea reached to Champions League final for the first since winning the trophy in 2012 against Bayern Munich. The Blues will play against Manchester City in the finals in Istanbul on 29th May.
