Chelsea has confirmed the latest football transfer of Romelu Lukaku from Inter for four years. With this contract, Lukaku made a return to his former club after seven years. Although the fee was not disclosed by the clubs involved, British and American media reported that Chelsea made an offer of £97.5 million ($135 million) for Lukaku.
The reported fees would make the 28-year-old the second most expensive player in British football history – behind only England star Jack Grealish, who joined Manchester City last week on a reported fee of £100million ($139m). The Belgian joined Chelsea from Anderlecht in August 2011, but left the West London club for Everton in 2014, after making only 15 appearances.
“I am delighted and blessed to be back in this wonderful club,” Romelu Lukaku said in a statement to the club. “It was a long journey for me: I came here when I was a kid with a lot to learn, now I am back with a lot of experience and more mature.”
“The way the club is going fits perfectly with my ambitions at the age of 28 and I am coming out of winning Serie A right now. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and I hope together we can achieve a lot of success…The challenge is to help the team win a few more trophies. I can’t wait to start the club and help me achieve more success. “
Lukaku’s return to Stamford Bridge will add even more firepower to a line of attack that already includes German duo Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, England’s Mason Mount, and American Christian Pulisic.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskia said in the club’s statement: “Romelu Lukaku is one of the best strikers and goal scorers in the world. We are absolutely excited to have him back at his favorite club and we are excited to add his talent to the Champions League winning team. Of course, we are looking to build on the success of last season, and Lukaku will be instrumental in achieving our goals.”
