Chelsea called off friendly match against Drogheda

Chelsea canceled their pre-season friendly match against Drogheda United scheduled to be played on Thursday. The Blues called off the match due to coronavirus concerns surrounding one of their players’ potential positive tests.4

The Champions League winners were settling into their third day near Dublin when they were forced to inform the League of Ireland Premier Division team that one of their players had tested positive for COVID-19.

On Thursday, Chelsea’s pre-season preparations in Ireland were hampered when the London club found out coronavirus reports among one of the Blues’ players and as result they were forced to cancel a friendly against Drogheda United.

According to Dan McCarthy, a Chelsea spokesman said: “Earlier today, we had a possible positive coronavirus case which we are investigating. The individual has been isolated from the rest of the group. We also decided, as a precaution, to cancel tonight’s behind closed doors game against Drogheda.”

Instead of the 90-minute workout, Thomas Tuchel held another training session as he tries to improve on an already poor pre-season that has seen many of his players miss Euro 2020 and Copa America duty.

They are set to return to England later this week and continue training at Cobham before visiting Bournemouth for a friendly on Tuesday, July 27.

Chelsea’s Pre-Season Schedule
July 20 – Fly to Dublin for week-long camp
July 22 – Drogheda United (a) | Friendly (CANCELLED)
July 27 – Bournemouth (a) | Friendly
August 1 – Arsenal (a) | Friendly
