Champions League: Ziyech helped Chelsea beat Malmö

On Tuesday night in southern Sweden, Chelsea beat Malmö 1-0 in Group H of the Champions League football match. For the visitors it was a difficult first half of attack vs defence as they only had one clear-cut chance. Ruben Loftus-Cheek slipped Kai Havertz through just before the half-hour mark, but the false nine delayed a shot, allowing a defender to apply pressure, and his effort was blocked by the goalkeeper.

Hakim Ziyech’s second-half goal helped Chelsea to a narrow win over Malmo that put them on the brink of the Champions League last 16. After half-chances for Hakim Ziyech and Loftus-Cheek, and Andreas Christensen’s long-range drive was saved at the second attempt by Johan Dahlin, Malmö almost delivered a hammer blow in first-half stoppage time, with Antonio-Mirko Colak volleying just wide of Edouard Mendy’s far post after smart work by Sergio Pea from a drop ball.

Ten minutes after the break Loftus-Cheek created an opportunity for himself, displaying excellent muscle and deft technique before firing a shot that was stopped by Dahlin. Two minutes later Chelsea got the crucial goal when Callum Hudson-Odoi combined with Havertz before racing free and laying the ball on a platter for Ziyech, who finished this time into the empty net.

Thiago Silva had a header pushed off the line after further superb work from Loftus-Cheek, and Havertz missed another one-v-one late on, but one goal was enough. The Blues are still in second place in Group H with nine points, with Juventus having a game in hand. Watch football highlights of the Champions League match in which Chelsea beat Malmö.
